Public spaces in Glasgow are disappearing. The latest at risk is First Hampden; the site of Scotland's first national football ground and the world's first purpose-built international football stadium. For over a century, this Crosshill site has served the community as Hampden Bowling Club but now, with the club’s closure, the site’s future hangs in the balance.Local residents have formed First Hampden CIC with a vision to bring the site into community ownership as both a heritage site and a modern and vibrant community hub. This reimagined space would provide an affordable events venue and place of recreation, accessible and open to all. Its sporting and social legacy would be preserved through curated installations to mark its history as a birthplace of football.However, City Property Glasgow — an arms length company owned by Glasgow City Council — is planning to market the site for commercial use or development. City Property Glasgow has, so far, declined to meet with First Hampden CIC to discuss a mutually-beneficial route to community ownership. Without a fair chance for a community-led option, the opportunity to make First Hampden a locally-valuable and nationally-significant site could be lost.
Statement of support:
I believe First Hampden's future should be shaped by its heritage and its community, not by commercial value alone. I would like to see immediate action taken to preserve the important history of this site and to allow it to thrive in the future as a community-led resource for the people of Glasgow and beyond.

The First Hampden Park opened here in 1873, becoming Scotland’s first national football stadium five years later. As the world’s first purpose-built international ground, it set the template for football grounds across the world.For the last 120 years, the site has been home to Hampden Bowling Club. Now, in 2026, as the club closes its doors, we face a question. What's the next chapter for First Hampden?To find an answer, local residents have formed the First Hampden Community Interest Company (CIC). Our mission is to build a partnership and work with all parties to secure the site as a vibrant Southside hub — safeguarding a precious piece of Scotland's heritage while serving our community.
